According to Channel 2 Action News in Atlanta, a high school football player from Pike County, Ga., has passed away after injuries sustained during a game on Friday night.

Dylan Thomas was taken by ambulance to Grady Memorial Hospital for surgery after collapsing while on the sideline in the second half. His uncle posted on Facebook saying that Thomas was in “very critical condition” and was suffering from brain swelling.

On Sunday, the school and football team gathered on their home field for a vigil to pray for the young athlete, and to carry Thomas’ jersey onto the field. Later that night, Thomas passed away.

Reports indicate that it’s still unclear where the young defensive tackle was hit when he was injured, but family members told Channel 2 that Thomas seemed “unfazed” until the second half.

“I heard that he was saying that you know he wasn’t really feeling right and that’s when his left leg and left arm went numb and he pretty much fell off the bench,” said Thomas’ uncle Nick Burgess.

Thomas was 16.
