Veteran NFL referee says officials missed Georgia-Tennessee penalty that would have resulted in an ejection
The Georgia Bulldogs are having their way with the Tennessee Volunteers through the first half of Saturday’s massive showdown.
Georgia leads Tennessee at halftime 24-6.
However, it could have been worse for Tennessee, according to rules expert Terry McAulay. The veteran NFL official tweeted that Vols defensive back Jaylen McCollough should have been ejected during Saturday’s first half due to a targeting — helmet-to-helmet — hit on quarterback Stetson Bennett.
The hit in question came in the first quarter on Bennett’s touchdown run.
I admit, I have no idea what targeting is in college football anymore.

McAulay’s response was shared via social media on Twitter.
“I did a long thread on the rules change regarding the crown of the helmet. I’ll add this play to the thread. This was most certainly a targeting foul since the rule’s inception. Apparently no longer. #PlayerSafety?” McAulay said.
McCollough would have been ejected from the game had the officials made the targeting call.
The Bulldogs lead the Vols 24-6.
