The San Francisco 49ers made history about two years ago, but there’s a new chapter to be made in two weeks when the 49ers meet the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV.

Sowers, an offensive assistant coach with the Niners, will become the first female coach to participate in a Super Bowl. She has been in the NFL for four seasons, serving as an offensive assistant coach. She previously worked with the Atlanta Falcons.

According to her 49ers bio, Sowers joined Atlanta after spending five years (2012-16) as the athletic director of the City of Kansas City. A former member of the 2013 United States Women’s National Football Team and a player herself in the WFA (women’s football alliance) for eight years, Sowers earned her master’s degree in kinesiology with an emphasis in pedagogy from the University of Central Missouri in 2012.

As highlighted in a recent piece in the San Franciso Chronicle, Sowers has been featured in a Microsoft commercial. The ad started airing recently and has opened a lot of eyes. Many, even locally, weren’t aware the 49ers employ a female coach. Not mentioned in the ad: She also is the first openly gay coach, male or female, in the league.

In 2017, Sowers, at the invitation of new head coach Kyle Shanahan, applied for the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship. It turned into a full-time job; she is in her third season with the team.

“She’s been tremendous,” quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo said. “She’s feisty, man. Katie is awesome out there. She’ll get after guys and it’s fun to be around.”

The Super Bowl will be in Miami on Feb. 2 with kickoff set for 6:30 p.m. on FOX.
