Tennessee got us started with a fairly exciting game against Bowling Green, winning 38-6 on Thursday night. But, the full slate of action happens on Saturday, with every other SEC team (other than Ole Miss) taking the field.

It’s going to be an exciting weekend, with games on tonight, Saturday, Sunday and Monday (with Ole Miss vs. Louisville in Atlanta).

But, before we get there, let’s take a look at your questions for this week’s SDS Mailbag:

@SChinni12:

Who is one SEC coach people are saying is on the hot seat who will keep his job? And, who is one coach no one is thinking about being on the hot seat right now but, by season’s end, won’t be the coach anymore?

Let me say this first — I think there’s a solid chance every single current SEC coach returns in 2022. We have 8 coaches — Eli Drinkwitz, Lane Kiffin, Mike Leach, Sam Pittman, Shane Beamer, Josh Heupel, Clark Lea and Bryan Harsin — entering either their first or second years with their current squads.

So, let’s start with the first part of your question, working with only 6 SEC head coaches — Ed Orgeron, Nick Saban, Kirby Smart, Jimbo Fisher, Mark Stoops and Dan Mullen.

There’s a lot of buzz about Coach O facing pressure this year and Kirby Smart being on the hot seat, too. I disagree with all that talk. Unless the NCAA comes down on LSU, Coach O will survive until 2022. Kirby Smart is going to be at Georgia for the long run. Seriously, who else is Georgia going to get that can do better than Smart?

As for a guy who isn’t being discussed as being on the hot seat, but should be, how about Dan Mullen? Florida had a lackluster end to the 2020 season, falling to LSU, Alabama and Oklahoma to end the year.

He has also openly flirted with the NFL the last couple of years. So, if Florida takes a step back and, let’s say, finishes third in the SEC East this year? Mullen could jump ship and finally head to the pro ranks. I don’t think he will, but it isn’t out of the realm of possibility.

Bob:

What non-SEC Week 1 game are you most excited for?

They play football outside the SEC? That’s news to me!

All kidding aside, there are 3 non-SEC matchups between ranked teams — No. 17 Indiana at No. 18 Iowa, No. 19 Penn State at No. 12 Wisconsin and No. 23 Louisiana at No. 21 Texas.

I’m excited for all 3 of those games, but if I had to pick one, I’d probably go with Louisiana at Texas. Can you imagine how quickly the excitement of the Steve Sarkisian era would evaporate if the Longhorns lose on Saturday? It would be instantaneous.

I think Texas will win, but it’s not smart to count out this Louisiana squad that Billy Napier has built. That’s a legitimate program and I wouldn’t be surprised at all if this game was tied midway through the fourth quarter.

As for a matchup not involving 2 ranked teams, give me Fresno State at No. 11 Oregon. Fresno State blew out UConn 45-0 in Week 0. The Huskies are awful, but Fresno State looked like a team that can win the Mountain West. The Ducks will have to watch out to avoid a nonconference upset, especially with a trip to Ohio State looming large next weekend.

Kyle:

I know we don’t necessarily need it right now, but what TV show do you wish could come back for its new season next week?

If you follow me on Twitter, you know I absolutely love “I Think You Should Leave,” the sketch comedy show starring Tim Robinson. There have only been 2 seasons thus far, but both have been hilarious. The Corncob TV sketch from Season 2 had me laughing so hard I was crying.

If you haven’t watched it yet, do yourself a favor and drop what you’re doing and go watch it now!

I know it takes time to write and make shows that are that funny and well done, but I wish there was a new season every month. Same thing with “Rick and Morty.” It’s tough to wait like 2 years between seasons.

But, as you mentioned, at least we have college football to lead the way for the next few months. Then, come February, I’ll get caught up on all the great TV I missed during the season!

@Dobbe8:

Over/under 1.5 wins for Kansas football this year?

I always love a chance to hate on the Jayhawks! Let me take a look at their schedule really quick … and, yep, I’m taking the under.

I think the Jayhawks get off to a good start on Friday night against the South Dakota Coyotes (but even that isn’t a given). Their other 2 nonconference games are at No. 22 Coastal Carolina (boy, the Jayhawks didn’t see that rise coming when they scheduled those games) and at Duke. I think they’ll lose both.

Considering they went 0-9 last year (including 0-8 against Big 12 teams), I don’t see the Jayhawks making many improvements in the conference standings. Their best chance at a second win might be on Nov. 6 at home against Kansas State. We’ll see.

For now, give me the Jayhawks’ under. I’ll take a 1-11 final record that will have new coach Lance Leipold wishing he stayed in Buffalo.
