It was a bold first week in the SEC, and well, we did call some of it. Drew Lock’s record. Deondre Francois’ injury. Jake Fromm’s emergence, A&M’s collapse. We told you so. OK, so we didn’t hit a thousand. It was A.J. Brown and not Van Jefferson who went off for Ole Miss. Middle Tennessee definitely didn’t beat Vandy, and Feliepe Franks played, but certainly didn’t star, for Florida.

That’s why we’re back strong for Week 2, going far out on a limb with another set of bold SEC predictions — one for each game.

Two scores for Tua

What can Alabama do for an encore against Fresno State? How about starting a mini-QB controversy by unveiling Tua Tagovailoa. Jalen Hurts will still be the man, but more than a few Tide backers are going to be calling for more Tua after Saturday, when he’ll put up a pair of touchdowns.

Auburn’s got this

It’s not our boldest prediction, but everybody and their grandma seems to think that without Kerryon Johnson, Auburn has no shot against Clemson. Au contraire. Kamryn Pettway will have a big game, and the fierce Auburn defense will get after Kelly Bryant like nothing he has yet seen. Auburn wins by 10, and the ACC is overrated this year.

Two 100-yard backs for LSU

This nearly happened last week, but this week, not only Derrius Guice but also senior Darrel Williams goes for 100 rushing yards. LSU will absolutely name its score against FCS foe Chattanooga, and don’t sleep on the possibility of Guice and Williams both having 1,000-yard seasons this year. Seriously.

Texas A&M will throw the ball

There’ll be a “get back to the basics” element of grinding the run with Trayveon Williams and Keith Ford in Saturday’s matchup with Nicholls State. But Kevin Sumlin is smart enough to know that the long-term possibility of him retaining his job will depend on Kellen Mond or Jake Hubenak hitting some passes. They’ll pass for 300 yards on Saturday, or the U-Haul might as well park in Sumlin’s driveway.

Kenny Hill takes down Arkansas

Arkansas’s allegedly much-improved defense is going to run into some Kryptonite in the form of wily TCU veteran Kenny Hill. In two prior games against Arkansas, Hill has passed for 386 and 377 yards. Interestingly, both games went to overtime. So here’s a call for 400 this time, and no overtime. TCU by two scores.

700 yards for Ole Miss

Two years ago, the Rebels hosted UT-Martin and beat them 76-3. This year will be worse, maybe not in points — that WOULD be impressive — but at least in yardage. Chad Kelly passed for 211 yards in 2015, and Ole Miss had 662 for the game. This time around, 350 for Shea Patterson and 700 for the Rebels are in the cards.

Simmons stands out

Your SEC defensive player of the week for Week 2? Look no farther than Starkville, where Jeffery Simmons is developing into one of the best pass-rushers in the SEC. La. Tech will throw a fair amount, and Simmons will have the kind of game that makes people realize what a beast he’s becoming for Dan Mullen.

Sony and Nick show out in South Bend

Sometimes, the smart money can get too smart. Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly has shown himself to be a master of absolutely nothing in South Bend. Why on Earth people are taking a UGA loss up there as a foregone conclusion is beyond me. Yes, UGA has underachieved a fair amount in the brief Kirby Smart era. That ends Saturday. Nick Chubb and Sony Michel each rush for 100 yards and UGA wins by 20.

John Kelly for offensive MVP

Tennessee’s passing game stepped up in a big way late in their comeback win over Georgia Tech. But John Kelly’s stout work on the ground was the biggest story that everybody slept on in Week 1. Kelly will eclipse 150 yards easily against Indiana State, as Tennessee will focus on the ground game in an effort to make sure Jarrett Guarantano can be somewhat comfortable backing up Quinten Dormady. All Kelly does is play hard — and well.

Special teams make difference at Missouri

There’s not a ton of defense looking to be played Saturday when South Carolina goes to Missouri. Both the Gamecocks and the Tigers showed little interest in stopping anybody last week, but both got victories. The difference? Outstanding Gamecocks work on special teams, which will continue in Week 2. Missouri has struggled mightily on special teams under Barry Odom, and those struggles will make it a very kind host this weekend.

Watch Lynn Bowden for Kentucky

Kentucky got an ugly 24-17 win in Week 1, but had a minor firestorm from stud freshman WR Lynn Bowden, who got whiny on Twitter after the game. The guess here is that a UK offense looking for a shot of energy goes to Bowden early and often against FCS foe Eastern Kentucky, and he’ll put up 100 yards and a score.

Dependable old Ralph Webb shows up

The surprise of opening weekend? Maybe the steady play of Vandy over MTSU … or the fact that stud RB Ralph Webb (above) was a virtual non-factor for the ’Dores. It won’t happen again. Webb goes for 150 over Alabama A&M, and everybody is happy.
