Several SEC coaches shared their worst career losses with ESPN Monday.

Auburn’s Gus Malzahn mentioned his BCS Championship loss to Florida State after listing two high school state championship games. The Auburn coach spent the first 15 years of his coaching career at the high school level coaching Hughes, Shiloh Christian and Springdale High School in Arkansas. Interestingly, Auburn offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee was Malzahn’s quarterback in the latter of the two state championship game losses.

Georgia’s Kirby Smart credited LSU’s 10-9 loss to Auburn in 2004 as the worst of his career. Smart was working as a defensive backs coach at the time, which was his first full-time FBS coaching job.

“We had a lot of the players back, and this first really, really big game, in Jordan-Hare, and we had the game won. Everything had to happen exactly right for [Auburn] to win and there was like four or five plays in a row that were really crazy freaky plays. If that game comes back up on ESPN Classic, I’ll see it, and I’m like, ‘That is amazing that those four things happened for the outcome to be what it did.’ They went on to an undefeated season. I guess if they had lost four or five games it wouldn’t have been as big of a loss, but it’s a fact that they went on to win them all. I’ll be honest with you, when I say it haunts me, it’s one of the ones that sticks out the most, because I thought we could’ve won it.”

Mississippi State’s Dan Mullen credited his team’s 2015 loss to LSU as the worst of his career. The Bulldogs trailed 21-19 with eight seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. Mullen took a delay of game penalty which forced the clock to run out and prevented Mississippi State from attempting a game-tying field goal.

“I messed up the call,” Mullen said. “We end up taking a delay of game penalty and it was solely on me. The wins, you think about sometimes and they put a smile on your face. But those losses, they just stick with you.”

Missouri’s Barry Odom was the only SEC coach who mentioned a loss from his playing career as his personal worst. The former Missouri linebacker recalled the infamous “Flea Kicker” play in which Nebraska receiver Matt Davidson caught a pass deflected off the leg of teammate Shelvin Wiggins as time expired.

Nebraska tied the game after a successful extra point attempt and defeated Mizzou, 45-38, in overtime.
