With 10 teams returning a quarterback who started last season ago, it’s no surprise the eyes of college football fans will be focused on the SEC and the potential for high-octane offenses.

While many of the SEC quarterbacks are explosive because of their dual-threat capabilities, there are a number of returning QBs who excelled in throwing the deep ball a season ago.

Here’s a look at the top returning quarterbacks in the SEC, in terms of explosive passing plays last season:

20-yard completions

1. Drew Lock, Missouri (62)

Worth noting …

The 62 20-yard completions by Lock were the most by an SEC quarterback since Chad Kelly of Ole Miss had 64 in 2015. … Stidham’s 48 completions of 20+ yards were not only second-most in the SEC, they were nearly twice as many as Auburn’s leader in 2016 (Sean White, 26). … Fromm was second in the nation last season among freshmen in 20-yard completions. Only Virginia Tech’s Josh Jackson (51) had more. … Bentley’s 38 20-yard pass plays were the most by a South Carolina quarterback since Dylan Thompson led the conference with 58 in 2014.

Worth noting …

Lock’s 32 completions of 30+ yards were the third-most by an SEC quarterback since 2010. Only Johnny Manziel in 2013 (33) and Aaron Murray in 2014 (33) had more over this span. … Shurmur’s 17 30-yard completions last season were an increase over his 2016 numbers (12) and a huge increase from the Vanderbilt leader in 2015 (Johnny McCrary, 4).

Not only did Lock’s 23 40-yard completions lead the SEC, they were the most by an SEC quarterback in the past eight seasons. In fact, since at least 2010, no other quarterback in the conference has had even 20 such completions in a season. Lock is tied with West Virginia’s Will Grier for the most 40-yard completions by a returning quarterback in the FBS. … Starkel’s nine completions of 40+ yards were just one fewer than Johnny Manziel had in his Heisman Trophy-winning freshman season at Texas A&M (10 in 2012).

50-yard completions

Lock led all FBS quarterbacks in 50-yard completions in 2017. In fact, it’s the most such completions by any FBS quarterback over the past eight seasons. … Stidham has the third-most 50-yard completions of any returning FBS QB, trailing only Lock and Grier, the former Florida QB, who had 12 last season. … As for Ta’amu, the junior QB did not start playing regularly for the Rebels until late October. Three of his four 50-yard completions went for touchdowns, including two in the Egg Bowl win over Mississippi State.

Lock was second in the FBS to only Oklahoma State’s Mason Rudolph (11) for the most 60-yard completions. Lock also led the SEC in 60-yard pass plays in 2016 (5). … Hurts was second to Lock in 2016 as well as last season, and his nine 60-yard completions are the second-most by an SEC QB over the past two seasons. … Starkel had a 60-yard completion in three straight games during a stretch in late October/early November, against Mississippi State, Auburn and New Mexico.

Lock was tied with former Ole Miss QB Shea Patterson for the most 70-yard completions in the SEC last season. In addition, only one player in the FBS had more 70-yard completions than Lock last season – Baylor’s Zach Smith (5). … Fromm was the first Georgia QB with multiple 70-yard pass plays in a season since Aaron Murray had three in 2013.
