SEC Network analyst Cole Cubelic spent the Memorial Day weekend ranking the SEC’s top quarterbacks and running backs entering the 2017 season, then facing the criticism that comes with such lists.

In a drafting scenario for college football, Cubelic said Mississippi State’s Nick Fitzgerald would be his top choice. Fitzgerald, a rising junior, had 1,375 rushing yards that ranked third nationally among quarterbacks, and his 16 touchdowns ranked fourth. Fitzgerald was followed by South Carolina’s Jake Bentley, Ole Miss’ Shea Patterson, Alabama’s Jalen Hurts and Georgia’s Jacob Eason.

Several replies questioned Bentley’s high spot by the former Auburn offensive lineman, and the omission of Arkansas’s Austin Allen. Cubelic later said he’d like Allen to make quicker decisions. For new Auburn quarterback Jarrett Stidham, Cubelic said he’d reserve his ranking until Stidham gains experience in the SEC.

Cubelic then listed top running backs, and began with LSU’s Heisman Trophy hopeful Derrius Guice.

For running backs, Alabama’s Bo Scarborough was brought up, and Cubelic said he could “be more dominant when healthy.”

On the other end, was Georgia’s Nick Chubb ranked too high?

“I realize the risk involved,” he tweeted. “But Chubb has fourteen 100 yard games vs power 5 opponents. Feels like a worthy risk.”
