Former quarterbacks Clint Stoerner and Greg McElroy joined SEC Network’s Laura Rutledge this week to break down the importance of Chad Kelly and Will Grier heading into Saturday’s nationally-ranked cross-divisional showdown in The Swamp.

Ole Miss carries a No. 3 national ranking to Gainesville to take on an unbeaten team that already has a signature win to its credit under Jim McElwain.

Here’s what Stoerner and McElroy had to say about quarterback play:

On Chad Kelly vs. Florida:

Clint Stoerner: Interested to seeing how he reacts with (Jonathan) Bullard up front and (Antonio) Morrison at the second level. And third level, getting (Jalen) Tabor back this week. I’m interested to see how he handles the pressures. I’m not completely sold yet that they’re the No. 3 team in the country and that he is that good of a quarterback.”

Greg McElroy: “He has a great supporting cast, unbelievable wideouts, running game is ever-improving, on defense though I think there’s a sizable advantage when you look at what Ole Miss has going against a depleted offensive line for the Florida Gators. I think Robert Nkemdiche could easily have a field day and this will be the biggest test Will Grier has faced on the outside.”

On what Will Grier needs to show:

Clint Stoerner: “They’ve done a great job to this point getting the ball out of his hands. He has great footwork and his eyes are int he right place. He throws a lot of balls where he’s anticipating. When you’re watching the game, you’re not real sure where the ball’s going and then a receiver pops out behind a linebacker. Will Grier has had to run for his life from time to time. But again, can they do it on the third and fourth downs?”

Greg McElroy: “Will Grier has to know when to use his legs. Right now, he’s not getting all the way through all his progressions. He’s looking at the 1, then he’s getting to the 2 then he’s taking off. He’s really not athletic enough to be able to really exploit a defense like Ole Miss. There’s too much speed on that side of the football for the Rebels. He’s got to learn how to be patient in his progressions and still understand that his offensive line could be a little bit leaky.”

Stoerner: “He’s got to learn to get down. We’ve seen him a few times where he takes a lot of hits.”
