There was plenty of great basketball played over the weekend. The problem? Not every SEC team got in on the action.

Some squads got blown out, while others picked up big wins. Some teams were surprising in a good way. Others were surprising in a bad way.

As we move toward SEC play, some coaches are feeling their seats warm up. But, for now, nonconference action continues with some more big-time matchups.

How did this past week’s action impact our power rankings? Here’s how all 14 teams stack up this week:

14. Mizzou (5-5 overall, Last week: 14)

The good news? The Border War is back! The bad news? Mizzou failed to show up for the rivalry game, getting blown out 102-65 on Saturday afternoon in Lawrence. It was yet another bad loss for coach Cuonzo Martin. Many fans are getting tired of this year’s team, and it’s hard to blame them. While a coaching change isn’t likely until after the season, you have to wonder if it’s time for a new leader in Columbia.

13. Georgia (4-5, LW: 13)

Georgia took down Jacksonville on Tuesday, but it came at a cost, as Jailyn Ingram suffered a season-ending knee injury. That’s horrible news for a team that had some momentum after a win over a then-ranked Memphis team. The Bulldogs are back in action this Saturday against George Mason, so we’ll see how they respond to the loss of one of their budding stars.

12. Ole Miss (6-3, LW: 10)

Ole Miss got absolutely wrecked by Western Kentucky in Atlanta over the weekend, falling 71-48 to the Hilltoppers. It’s tough to point to any 1 thing that went wrong for the Rebels – Western Kentucky is just a better team. That’s not something we should still be saying about the Rebels in the Kermit Davis era. If the Rebels don’t pick up some impressive wins soon, this will end up being a lost year.

11. Vanderbilt (5-4, LW: 11)

Scotty Pippen Jr. is heating up for the Commodores, but that’s the end of the good news for Vanderbilt. The Commodores have lost back-to-back-to-back games, so things have fallen apart after a 5-1 start to the year. They have a chance to get back on track against Austin Peay on Saturday, but once SEC play starts, the struggles will likely continue for Jerry Stackhouse’s crew.

10. Mississippi State (6-3, LW: 9)

I’ve been very disappointed in the Bulldogs this year. I had Ben Howland’s squad pegged as a potential sleeper in the SEC race. Now, I have questions about whether or not the Bulldogs can even finish in the top half of the SEC standings when conference play begins. They’ve lost back-to-back games against Minnesota and Colorado State. Both are good teams, but not teams that the Bulldogs should be losing to. Mississippi State held a 57-49 lead with 6 minutes left in the game against Colorado State before choking it away. We’ll see if the Bulldogs can regroup against Georgia State and Furman this week.

9. South Carolina (7-2, LW: 12)

South Carolina has been one of the biggest surprises of the season. Keyshawn Bryant is a solid player, but Frank Martin has definitely done a good job coaching up some of the new players on this squad. Devin Carter had a breakout game in Sunday’s 66-65 win over Florida State, leading the Gamecocks with 16 points, including a layup that broke a 61-61 tie late in the game:

In a week with several teams suffering bad losses, it was refreshing to see the Gamecocks go the other direction. We’ll see if they can keep that positive momentum moving forward.

8. Texas A&M (7-2, LW: 8)

The Aggies lost to TCU on Saturday, but I continue to be impressed with this team. Saturday’s upcoming game against Oregon State looked better on paper heading into the season, as the Beavers made a run in the NCAA Tournament last year. This year, though, the bottom has fallen out and Oregon State is currently 1-8 overall. I expect the Aggies to take care of business in that game and officially match last year’s win total.

7. Florida (7-3, LW: 7)

Florida continues to shoot itself in the foot after starting the season so well. Following a 6-0 start, the Gators have now lost 3 of 4 games, including to a Maryland team playing under an interim coach. Donta Scott played hero for the Terps on Sunday in the 70-68 win, draining this tough shot to give Maryland a late lead:

Perhaps it’s time for the Gators to play the rest of the season under an interim coach, too. Mike White’s seat has to be on fire at this point.

6. Kentucky (7-2, LW: 6)

Kentucky should be a lot lower than this after Saturday’s loss at Notre Dame, but with how disappointing other teams have been, it’s hard to bump the Wildcats down at all. Still, it’s worth questioning why John Calipari didn’t call a timeout here after Notre Dame took the lead:

I love the alpha-dog tendencies TyTy Washington showed on that play, but he went way too soon and didn’t get a good look. Once it was clear he was intent on barrelling into the lane, Coach Cal should have called a timeout. Now, the Wildcats have lost both games they’ve played against top-tier competition. Saturday’s trip to Las Vegas to play Ohio State isn’t looking promising.

5. Arkansas (9-1, LW: 1)

The Hogs fell victim to the Norman trap, going to Oklahoma and getting blown out by new coach Porter Moser and the Sooners on Saturday. Eric Musselman was ejected from the game after he disagreed with a no-call on a potential foul:

That was likely some built-up frustration, as the Hogs were being dominated all day. Oklahoma took a 13-0 lead and never looked back. The Hogs are going to have to figure out how to start games a little better.

4. Tennessee (7-2, LW: 2)

The Vols bounced back on Saturday with a 40-point blowout of UNC-Greensboro after Tuesday’s brutal shooting performance against Texas Tech. That should build plenty of confidence for Rick Barnes and company as they prepare for a Saturday road trip to Memphis. The Tigers are reeling right now, so the Vols need to take advantage to pick up another solid win before league play begins.

3. LSU (9-0, LW: 5)

LSU is now the only remaining unbeaten team in the SEC after taking down Georgia Tech in Atlanta on Saturday. A tricky contest at Louisiana Tech looms this coming Saturday, but I expect the Tigers to take care of business. Tari Eason has been a breakout star for this team, leading the way with 23 points against the Yellow Jackets. He also threw down this powerful dunk:

I still have some questions about how this team will fare against a top-25 squad, but we’ll find out soon enough, as the Tigers start out SEC play with a bang.

2. Auburn (8-1, LW: 4)

Jabari Smith is simply electric to watch. I’m starting to think he has a legitimate shot to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft. This play literally made me stand up off my couch when I saw it live:

The Tigers, who have talent and depth across the board, will go as far as Smith can take them this year. Fortunately for Auburn fans, it seems he can take them pretty far.

1. Alabama (8-1, LW: 3)

Another game against a Final Four team from last year, another win. Alabama has now beaten Gonzaga and Houston in back-to-back games. Both the Bulldogs and Cougars scored 82 points. When the Tide play Baylor in January, will we see another 82-point performance? Can Alabama score even more? Based on the way this season is going, it looks like the loss to Iona last month was more of a blip. The Tide are firing on all cylinders now.
