Which SEC schools have produced the best NFL talent in recent seasons? According to one study, Georgia churns out quarterbacks unlike any other SEC school, while LSU is known for its busts at the game’s most important position. Ole Miss has done a great job of sending overachieving prospects to the league, while Tennessee sends the greatest percentage of future All-Pro performers to the NFL.

When attempting to ask such a complex question, any number of factors could be taken into consideration. Here’s how ESPN attempted to break it down in a recent study. Dating back to the 2002 draft, 3,831 draft selections were examined. Picks were weighed by overall selection, for example, the No. 1 overall pick is expected to accomplish more than the No. 300 overall pick. The success rate of each pick was determined by a number of factors, including All-Pro and Pro Bowl selections, as well as the number of starts by each player.

Based on these calculations, Ole Miss has sent the fifth-best overachieving prospects to the NFL (+0.68%) — best among all SEC schools. On the other end of the spectrum, Arkansas finished No. 3 worst with a draft value of (-0.68%) and Missouri finished with the No. 8 worst overall draft value (-0.44%).

Georgia finished as the third best producer of quality NFL quarterbacks as its four draft prospects overachieved by +0.62%. LSU finished by far as the worst producer of NFL quarterbacks, thanks in large part to JaMarcus Russell busting as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 draft, with a grade of -2.31%.

The figures weren’t all bad for LSU, as the Tigers helped to produce the second most long-term starters during this period. In total, 24% of LSU’s draft picks last longer than four NFL seasons, the same number as Georgia. Those figures lead the SEC. Florida measured at 17.7% in the same category with Alabama right behind at 16.7%.

Tennessee leads the SEC in the percentage of All-Pros sent to the NFL over the last 15 drafts, as 8.8% of selections from Knoxville go on to become the elite players at their positions at the game’s highest level.
