More than 20 players from the SEC participated in Senior Bowl practices this week in advance of Saturday’s annual showcase game.

Who made our list of SEC studs and duds this week? Let’s find out.

STUDS

1. Sammie Coates, WR, Auburn: Scouts from numerous NFL teams and media outlets have been impressed with Coates’ physical tools this week, citing his length, impressive speed and even more impressive leaping abilities as skills that will likely translate well to the professional level. Bleacher Report analyst and former NFL safety Matt Bowen said he was most impressed with Coates’ showing during Thursday’s practice, where he reportedly presented an ability to get inside leverage across the middle of the field in addition to his ability to catch fades and jump balls in red zone situations. Bowen said he had hoped to see something beyond Coates’ deep-ball potential, and he got his wish on Thursday.

2. Preston Smith, DL, Mississippi State: Smith began his senior season with little NFL Draft buzz surrounding his name, but after earning the SEC’s Defensive Lineman of the Week honor for three straight weeks to open the season he skyrocketed to what many considered a potential mid-round selection. By the middle of this week’s Senior Bowl practices, however, Smith had risen his draft stock even further, causing some to regard him as a potential first round pick this April. Mike Herndon of AL.com cited that Smith looked excellent in 1-on-1 drills, and many have said his ability to get a quick first step off the edge or to slide inside to defensive tackle has made him even more valuable as a prospect.

3. Cody Prewitt, S, Ole Miss: Prewitt was an All-American as a junior in 2013, and although he could not repeat the feat in 2014 he is still regarded as one of the top safeties participating in this year’s Senior Bowl. Bowen was impressed throughout the week with Prewitt’s abilities to cover ground and play the ball down the field as a center fielder, and Fox Sports noted he is also an excellent run-stopper and sound tackler, citing a play from practice earlier this week in which Prewitt blew up a reverse in the backfield. Many consider Prewitt a potential second- or third-round selection with potential first round upside if he turns these stellar practice sessions into a strong showing in Saturday’s game.

DUDS

1. Blake Sims, QB, Alabama: Sims had his best practice session of the week on Wednesday, but at week’s end most reports state the Alabama signal caller struggled mightily throughout the week. (For what it’s worth, most reports say all the quarterbacks at the Senior Bowl, not just Sims, have struggled mightily throughout the week.) Sims’ leadership and poise impressed some coaches and scouts, but he was high and inaccurate with many of his throws. One of his harshest critiques came from ESPN’s Michael DiRocco, who said “after watching Blake Sims throw for several days I’m starting to wonder how Alabama won the SEC and made the College Football Playoff.”

2. Trenton Brown, OL, Florida: Brown arrived at this week’s Senior Bowl 16 pounds heavier than his playing weight during the season, and according to 247Sports one word that has been used in a number of Brown’s interviews has been “lazy.” Brown said he has aimed to prove this week that he is not a lazy player, and vowed to get his weight back down as the draft process continues, citing the combine as a date by which he’d like to drop from his current 376 pounds to somewhere below 360 pounds.
