USA Today writer Christine Brennan stirred up the college football world on Wednesday when she wrote a column that described the Big Ten’s announcement of a rescheduled season next month as the “darkest day” in Big Ten history.

The opinion brought an onslaught of reaction, which included more than 650 retweets and 2,600 quote tweets in the first six hours after Brennan tweeted it.

Many replies and quote tweets centered on the scandals at Penn State involving Jerry Sandusky, and Michigan State involving Larry Nassar. But other fans also brought up scandals at Maryland and Ohio State in recent years.

State-of-the-art testing and enhanced medical and safety protocols were also raised among the points against Brennan’s opinion piece.
