This stat shows how dominant the SEC has been during the CFP era

When the first College Football Playoff rankings were released on Tuesday night, it was all but certain an SEC team would be No. 1 — the only question was whether Alabama or Georgia would grab the top spot.

Georgia ended up at No. 1, with Alabama checking in at No. 2, but that could all change in the coming weeks, of course.

The CFP is only entering its fourth year of existence, but in those four years, the SEC has been dominant.

In fact, of the four teams to ever hold the No. 1 spot in the rankings, three are SEC teams — Mississippi State, Georgia and, most frequently, Alabama:

The other team to hold the top spot, unsurprisingly, is Clemson. The Tigers have made it to the last two championship games against Alabama, winning once and losing once.

Notre Dame is the No. 3 team in the country and seems primed to take over the No. 1 spot should the two SEC teams falter.

However, the SEC’s dominance continues this week, and it will likely do so this time next Tuesday, too.
