Steve Spurrier changed the SEC in so many ways, one way he did so is often overlooked. Thanks to Spurrier, the visor became a cool look for the coaches within the league.

During his recent appearance on ESPN 104.5 FM in Baton Rouge program Off the Bench, Spurrier was asked to share his thoughts on the fact Lane Kiffin acknowledged he wears a visor to honor the former Florida and South Carolina head coach.

“Well, I appreciate that, a lot of coaches have said that,” Spurrier said during his appearance on the program. “Gus Malzahn, Dan Mullen, Hugh Freeze, several coaches have said that. I appreciate those guys saying that.”

Spurrier then went on to share the story of why he wore the visor during his incredibly successful run in Gainesville.

“When I got to Florida in ’90, someone asked me ‘Why you wearing that visor?’ I said, ‘Cuz nobody else was!’ Sometimes in life to be successful, you have to be a little different than everybody else,” Spurrier added. “That was one way I thought I could be a little different, hopefully, my win-loss record would be different than all the other coaches that coached at Florida.”

Spurrier changed the game of football in so many ways for the SEC, it’s often easy to overlook the subtle ways the league’s coaches continue to honor one of the game’s all-time best.
