Steve Spurrier is never one to shy away from speaking his mind.

The former South Carolina and Florida coach recently gave an interview to AL.com — in which he answered 20 questions on a myriad of topics revolving around the sport.

Spurrier delved into inquiries on Nick Saban, his own golf game, recruiting stories from his days in Gainesville, and even his thoughts on the Ohio State-Michigan game.

Towards the end of his interview, he spoke about two rather fascinating topics. During his time in Florida and South Carolina, Spurrier has coached in nine conference title games.

When asked about the best player he’s ever faced in an SEC Championship Game, he had this to say:

“Oh, it’s gotta be Cam Newton. He pretty much led that Auburn team to the national championship that year. That’s the only one we got clobbered in. Well, I think Alabama beat us in ’99 34-7. Shaun Alexander had a field day on us, so he’d probably be the next best.”

He then spoke about the current four-team playoff system. Many have been pining to expand the field to include eight teams. With the current situation involving the Big Ten and its four Top-10 teams, the discussion has been opened up yet again.

Spurrier had this to say about the current climate in regards to postseason play — and whether there should be four or eight teams included in the playoff:

“Probably eight. I would go for eight, though it would hurt the bowl games a little bit. Or maybe you could just put the first round in the Sugar Bowl and the other bowls and so forth. I’m in favor of eight. That would get a lot of people in and just like in basketball, the national champions in basketball a lot of times don’t even win their conference. It’s who plays the best at the end of the year usually ends up being the champion.”
