College football programs are in the “mandatory workout” phase of the amended offseason but one program is hitting the pause button.

South Alabama athletics director Joel Erdmann told AL.com’s Creg Stephenson that the Jaguars are pausing workouts to conduct more COVID-19 tests. This past weekend the program wrapped up its voluntary workouts.

“We’re pausing (workouts) and doing an additional full round of testing,” Erdmann told AL.com. “That’s everybody that’s here.

“We’re testing this week and into next.”

Erdmann told AL.com that South Alabama has had “some positive tests,” but did not provide a number citing “privacy for the student-athletes and the staff,” per the report.

NCAA guidelines allow for programs opening the season on Sept. 5 (the week South Alabama plays Southern Miss) to hold mandatory weight training, conditioning and film review for up to eight hours per week from July 13-23. Starting on July 24, athletes can participate in up to 20 hours per week (4 hours per day maximum) of “countable athletically related activities.” Erdmann told AL.com that South Alabama hopes to resume workouts by the 24th.

South Alabama has one SEC program on its 2020 schedule. The Jaguars play Florida on Sept. 19. The SEC is expected to make a decision on out-of-conference contests by the end of the month.
