Don’t fret Alabama fans.

A College Football Playoff semifinal trip’s on the horizon with three more victories this season.

The Crimson Tide’s win over No. 1 and previously-unbeaten Mississippi State over the weekend convinced the CFP selection committee that Nick Saban’s team is the nation’s best after 12 weeks of the season, pushing Alabama from fifth to No. 1 in Tuesday’s fourth rankings reveal.

Florida State, despite winning its 26th straight game, stayed at No. 3 in the rankings, ahead of Mississippi State and behind one-loss Oregon.

“We feel like Alabama’s the most complete team right now — offense, defense and the kicking game,” said CFP chairman Jeff Long. “We look at Florida State’s body work and compared it those around them, Oregon and Mississippi State.”

Much of Tuesday night’s panel talk centered around Mississippi State after a five-point loss in Tuscaloosa. If the Bulldogs win out at 11-1 and finish second in the SEC West to the Crimson Tide, will it be enough to keep the No. 4 spot?

“Based on what we heard from Jeff Long, if we’re talking about Top 25 wins, Mississippi St. only has (one) even though the Bulldogs have the best loss in the country,” Danny Kanell said. “They weren’t super competitive (Saturday) and had that late touchdown.”

Pollack countered quickly.

“You gotta be careful when you say stuff like that, they had two red zone turnovers, could’ve scored

“I think Mississippi State’s five-game stretch is better and more impressive than anybody’s in the country,” Pollack said. “At Death Valley at night is the hardest atmosphere in college football, bar none. You play Arkansas at he end of that stretch, A&M, Arkansas … that’s four out of five games in a row where not a lot of teams can say they’ve (played a similar schedule).”

Sitting at No. 7 in the rankings, it’ll be difficult for Baylor to play its way into the top four if the teams ahead of the Bears win ou

Quick SEC takeaways from the fourth CFP Top 25:

  • Alabama and Mississippi State remained in prime position in the top four after Saturday’s head-to-head meetings.
  • Ole Miss and Georgia stayed on the CFP fringe in the No. 8 and 10 slots. The Bulldogs’ 27-point win over Auburn gave them a five-spot ascension.
  • Auburn dropped five spots to No. 14 after its second straight SEC loss. The Tigers are the highest-ranked three-loss team.
  • LSU fell out of the rankings after a shutout loss to Arkansas while SEC East leader Mizzou debuted at No. 20.

ESPN reaction from its analysts Tuesday night:

Scott Van Pelt: “You want to bake the committee a cake and say have a piece of this. Baylor lacks the (conference) championship game that some of these other one-loss teams do.”

David Pollack: “I think they already receive credibility for strength of schedule. The only loss to Ole Miss wasn’t a horrible loss. Ohio State has the best win of the four-team out (Nos. 5-8) group.”

Danny Kanell: “Ohio State has the chance to make a statement in a conference championship game. The biggest question for me is what the committee is going to value. Conference championship games will be important and Mississippi State may not get that chance.”
