Week 2 wasn’t the best for SEC teams.

Tennessee and Arkansas lost heartbreakers, Missouri and Auburn didn’t look good in close wins and schools from other conferences gained steam as a new Associated Press Top 25 poll looms.

But there were some impressive performances from SEC teams that merit recognition. These type of performances will be tracked throughout the season, with the SDS staff updating this list each week.

Many performances listed below have persisted from Week 1, but there were some new entries that knocked others out of the Top 10. The Aggies, though, still have the No. 1 spot for their opening week win against Arizona State.

10. No. 10 GEORGIA 31, VANDERBILT 14

Date: Sept. 12
Star Player: Georgia RB Nick Chubb
Key Stat: Chubb’s 189 rushing yards

Why:Given a sluggish start and the excitement in Nashville, there was a time in this game when Georgia looked prone to an upset. But you can’t stop Chubb forever, as the Commodores learned. Isaiah McKenzie returned a punt 77 yards for a touchdown. RB Sony Michel also showed it doesn’t matter who quarterbacks the Bulldogs when they have such a deep backfield.

9. SOUTH CAROLINA 17, NORTH CAROLINA 13

Date: Sept. 3
Star Player: LB Skai Moore
Key Stat: Gamecocks intercepted three passes

Why: If not for Moore’s two interceptions in the end zone, the Gamecocks may have been left off this list entirely. South Carolina’s linebacker was all over the field and helped address questions about Steve Spurrier’s front seven. New QB Connor Mitch didn’t put up great stats but improved as the game went on.

8. OLE MISS 73, FRESNO STATE 21

Date: Sept. 12
Star Player: QB Chad Kelly (four touchdowns)
Key Stat: Two interceptions by Fresno State in the third quarter

Why:While not quite the point differential of the Rebels’ Week 1 result (see below), Ole Miss managed to get another blowout while furthering Kelly’s already-growing reputation in Oxford. Fresno State has been something of a giant killer the last decade, but the Bulldogs couldn’t stop Ole Miss giant defensive lineman Robert Nkemdiche from scoring an offensive touchdown in his second straight game.

7. No. 9 GEORGIA 51, LOUISIANA-MONROE 14

Date: Sept. 5
Star Player: RB Nick Chubb
Key Stat: Chubb’s 7.5 yards per carry

Why:Although the game was called with 10 minutes left due to lighting in Athens, it wouldn’t have taken long for the Bulldogs to run out the clock. Chubb and Keith Marshall each ran for two touchdowns and showed Georgia won’t have to pass much to be successful.

6. No. 6 AUBURN 31, LOUISVILLE 24

Date: Sept. 5
Star Player: RB Peyton Barber
Key Stat: The defense allowed 0.8 yards per rush after initial contact

Why:QB Jeremy Johnson (three interceptions) didn’t look like the Heisman contender that many are billing him to be, but that’s alright when the Tigers defense is performing like it did here. New defensive Will Muschamp got his team to tackle efficiently and limit the Cardinals rushing attack. A late onside kick attempt by Louisville made for a few nervous moments, but the Tigers were the stronger team throughout this game.

5. No. 18 ARKANSAS 48, UTEP 13

Date: Sept. 5
Star Player: QB Brandon Allen
Key Stat: Held UTEP RB Aaron Jones to 70 rushing yards

Why: This game was everything a Bret Bielema win is supposed to be, with an extra sprinkle of quarterback efficiency. Allen (308 passing yards, four touchdowns) looked deadly when throwing to WR Keon Hatcher, the running backs looked more than capable in place of the injured Jonathan Williams, and the Arkansas defense limited the efficiency of their opponent’s star running back.

4. No. 17 OLE MISS 76, TENNESSEE-MARTIN 3

Date: Sept. 5
Star Player: DT Robert Nkemdiche
Key Stat: 324 passing yards

Why: Nkemdiche stole the limelight during QB Chad Kelly’s impressive debut. The defensive lineman was his usual All-American self on defense, blocking a field goal while also hauling in a 31-yard touchdown pass. Kelly split time with two other quarterbacks but separated himself in coach Hugh Freeze’s “competition,” averaging 14.1 yards per attempt.

3. KENTUCKY 26, SOUTH CAROLINA 22

Date: Sept. 12
Star Player: Kentucky QB Patrick Towles
Key Stat: Zero Kentucky punts in the first half

Why: The Wildcats snapped a six-year SEC road losing streak at South Carolina. Kentucky’s offense clicked in the first half as the Wildcats went up 24-7, but couldn’t do much in the second half. Kentucky was able to add two points after returning a Pharoh Cooper fumble 98 yards during a two point conversion. Towles went 21-of-29 for 192 yards.

2. No. 3 ALABAMA 35, No. 20 WISCONSIN 17

Date: Sept. 5
Star Player: RB Derrick Henry
Key Stat: Held Wisconsin to 40 rushing yards

Why:Henry showed he’s more than capable of being the feature back, rushing for 147 yards and three touchdowns against the Crimson Tide’s Big Ten opponent. Nick Saban still wasn’t naming a starting quarterback, but both Jake Coker (15-of-21) and Cooper Bateman (7-of-8) were efficient when they weren’t handing the ball off to Henry. Alabama’s defense performed how everyone expected.

1. TEXAS A&M 38, No. 15 ARIZONA STATE 17

Date: Sept. 5
Star Player: DE Myles Garrett
Key Stat: 14 tackles for loss

Why: There’s just something about the Aggies and early-season games against ranked foes. A year after winning a big game at South Carolina, a new-look Texas A&M limited star Arizona State QB Mike Bercovici to just 199 yards and one touchdown. Texas A&M rotated QBs Kyle Allen (198 passing yards) and Kyler Murray (49 passing yards, 69 rushing) throughout the game, making the team’s convincing win all the more impressive.
