A prominent former college is reportedly in consideration among NFL circles for a possible pending coaching opening with the Dallas Cowboys.

Mike Freeman of the Bleacher Report has reported that there is increasing belief around the league that owner Jerry Jones is focusing on two primary candidates as replacements: Former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer and Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.

While current Cowboys coach Jason Garrett’s job security has been a popular topic for years when discussing the NFL, Freeman said league sources told him that these rumors feel different.

“Garrett, who’s been the head coach in Dallas since midway through the 2010 season, would have to win a Super Bowl to keep his job, according to the sources,” he reported.

It bubbled up after Jones’ latest comments following the Cowboys’ disappointing loss to New England on Sunday.

While Jones’ stunning comments criticizing the coaching staff after the Cowboys’ loss to New England on Sunday certainly caught people’s attention, Jones is thought to be itching to make a change not so much because of one game but because he has grown tired of the team’s mediocre performances the last few years.

Freeman explained why the connection is possible.

“Meyer would be a Jones kind of hire,” Freeman reported. “He’s high-profile, known as a football savant, and to Jones he’d bring instant credibility to the job.”

Interestingly, Meyer made comments last month that he would take the Cowboys job if offered.

“That’s New York Yankees, that’s the Dallas Cowboys,” Meyer said. “That’s the one. Great city. They got Dak Prescott, you got Zeke Elliott. You got a loaded team. And I can’t speak for him obviously, I hate to even speculate because I don’t know him, that’s really not fair, but to me, that’s the one job in professional football that you kinda say, ‘I got to go do that.’”

Meyer then said he hasn’t been contacted by the Cowboys, but when Cowherd asks if he would listen should Dallas come calling, he said:

“Sure. Absolutely. Absolutely. That one? Yes.”

Of course, Jones heard those comments.

“For Urban Meyer to say that is a compliment,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas via Michael Pro Football Talk. “Period. I really know that. The job is a great job. Now, that’s not implying that I made it that way, or I don’t make it that way. It’s just the place to be.”
