USA Today reporter explains significance of Les Miles agreement
On Thursday evening, SEC fans learned LSU would give former football coach Les Miles $1.5 million as a one-time lump sum payment to settle his buyout, saving LSU $5 million off the original agreement.
We don’t yet know why this Miles agreed to lower his buyout by millions, but USA Today Dan Wolken took a stab on Twitter to explain why.
Maybe it’s just me but nobody says “Hey here’s $5 million” back unless they’ve got $5 million coming in somewhere else https://t.co/bAM1374oZ3

Yes, he had a mitigation clause. This deal makes no sense unless Les is about to sign a deal that would pay him more than the amount in his LSU buyout https://t.co/ROf6f2XK0e

The last few weeks, Miles has been linked to the coaching vacancy at Kansas. Current Jayhawks coach David Beaty announced on Nov. 4 that he will not return next season.
If Miles is close to landing the Kansas job or any other position, agreeing to a settlement with LSU makes a lot of sense. Wolken is merely connecting the dots.
Miles went 114-34 in 12 years as head coach at LSU. The Tigers athletic director Joe Alleva fired Miles after a 2-2 start to the 2016 season.
