As talk of College Football Playoff expansion intensifies, many are wondering what that would mean for conference title games.

Considering teams like Northwestern, Pitt and Utah are competing for titles this weekend, some analysts think it’s unnecessary to have those conference championships at all.

On Wednesday, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey joined “The Dan Patrick Show” and defended conference title games, as you can see in the clip below:

Of course, it’s easy to defend conference title games when yours has No. 1 Alabama taking on No. 4 Georgia, so that’s not exactly the game critics are targeting.

As Patrick mentioned above, though, things are changing rapidly in college sports, so who knows what things will look like in five years?
