The New Orleans Saints have a complicated relationship with NFL officials. Ever since the infamous blown pass interference call in last season’s NFC Championship game, referees have been on thin ice with Saints fans.

It only took two weeks for officials to fan the flames again, and in poetic fashion, it happened in a game against the Los Angeles Rams.

In the first half of Sunday’s matchup, the Rams were knocking on the door and the Saints’ pass rush got to Jared Goff, as the ball came free. Defensive lineman Cam Jordan was off and running untouched to the end zone, thinking he had a scoop-and-score, but the NFL officials had other ideas, blowing the play dead for an incompletion.

After taking a closer look, it appears clear that the ball came out before Goff’s arm began moving forward, resulting in a fumble that was not called.

A lot of frustration from the Saints fans likely comes from the fact that the officials blew the play dead, instead of letting it play out and taking a closer look with a review to be entirely sure. The Rams got a field goal out of the possession, and head coach Sean Payton’s team was once again on the wrong side of a missed call against the Rams.

FOX rules analyst Mike Pereira even went as far as to dub the missed call “fumblegate” on Sunday.

Sunday’s game likely only made the Saints’ relationship with NFL officials even tenser, and it will get worse with each missed call that goes against New Orleans this season.
