The SEC has only Alabama in the top 10 of the Associated Press Top 25. But along with the Big Ten, it has the most ranked teams in the FBS.

Coaches placed five SEC teams in their poll while sports writers included the same number of conference squads in the AP Top 25.

Among SEC teams, Texas A&M fell 13 spots to its current No. 23 ranking in the AP Poll following its 29-28 home loss to Ole Miss. Meanwhile, Auburn slid 10 spots to No. 18 after its 13-7 loss at Georgia.
What do we make of the drop by the Aggies and Tigers? And are other teams deservedly where they should be?

Not falling victim to massive overreactions, here’s how the AP Top 25 Poll should’ve looked based on Week 11 performances.

HOW THE AP TOP 25 POLL SHOULD’VE LOOKED

1. Alabama (10-0; 61 first-place votes) — Leave it to the Crimson Tide to rout a team in Mississippi State that upset Texas A&M the previous week. And when Jalen Hurts has a game like he did against the Bulldogs, when he became the first player in Alabama history to throw for 300 yards and rush for 100 in the same game, it’s hard to believe that the QB is a true freshman. The SEC West has been clinched, Saturday’s home game with Chattanooga awaits and the Iron Bowl follows. By time the Tigers come to Tuscaloosa for the annual tussle, Bama’s winning streak will be at 23.

2. Ohio State (9-1) — The Buckeyes have been impressive the last two weeks, beating Nebraska and Maryland by identical 62-3 scores. J.T. Barrett, who accounted for four touchdowns to set the Big Ten’s all-time total TD record, should probably be getting some more Heisman love. Next up for Ohio State is a trip to Michigan State, which routed Rutgers 49-0 last week, but has been Mark D’Antonio’s worst Spartans team since he took over in East Lansing in 2007. After that, it’s just 12 days until Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan Wolverines visit the Horseshoe.

3. Louisville (9-1) — After spotting Wake Forest a 12-0 lead, Lamar Jackson and the Cardinals scored 44 unanswered points. What was arguably the best loss in the FBS – a six-point defeat at Clemson – has lost some of its luster. But who knows? Maybe Bobby Petrino’s whining about style points made an impact on some CFP selection committee members.

4. Michigan (9-1) — The best defense in the Big Ten – and one of the best in the FBS – was out-defended by Iowa in the Hawkeyes’ 14-13 win. It’s not the end of the world for the Wolverines, who can rebound against an improved Indiana team at home on Saturday. Then Jim Harbaugh takes his squad into Columbus to battle his good buddy Urban Meyer and Ohio State.

5. Wisconsin (8-2) — Even though the Badgers have one more loss than Clemson, they have the more impressive resume. Dabo Swinney’s Clemson team has one-score victories over two ranked teams while Paul Chryst’s club has beaten three ranked squads. But that’s not all. Wisconsin has also lost by seven points to Michigan and Ohio State, which were both ranked in the top four at the time. The Badgers visit Purdue on Saturday in their last road game.

6. Clemson (8-1) — Five one-score victories finally caught up with Deshaun Watson and the Tigers, who lost to Pittsburgh by a point at home. Louisville has already completed its conference slate, so all Clemson has to do to clinch the ACC Atlantic is win at Wake Forest next week. The Tigers might return to the CFP if they win the ACC Championship Game.

7. Washington (9-1) — The Huskies ran into USC, the Pac-12 South’s hottest team, and ended up losing 26-13 at home. Washington State, the Pac-12 North’s hottest team, is 7-0 in conference play, having passed Washington to take the division lead. The Nov. 25th Apple Cup will decide the North if the Huskies and Cougars win their games this week. Washington hosts Arizona State while Wazzu visits Colorado.

8. Oklahoma (8-2) – Speaking of hot teams, no Big 12 school has been better over the last seven weeks than the Sooners. Oklahoma, whose last loss was a 45-24 beatdown by Ohio State on Sept. 17, has an outside shot at returning to the CFP. Bob Stoops’ bunch travels to West Virginia on Saturday before hosting Oklahoma State for Bedlam. They might be the two toughest matchups left in the FBS.

9. West Virginia (8-1) – The Mountaineers, still the Big 12’s lone one-loss team, won at Texas last week despite being an underdog. If they beat Oklahoma at home, the Mountaineers will have games against Iowa State and Baylor remaining, but first things first. Shutting down the Sooners would be a huge step.

10. Penn State (8-2) – How the season has turned for the Nittany Lions since their 2-2 start. They’ve won six straight, they visit Rutgers – the worst team in the Big Ten – on Saturday, and they’re in contention for the East division title. The hot seat James Franklin was sitting on earlier this season has cooled considerably.

11. Utah (8-2) — The Utes, who beat Arizona State 49-26 last week, are engaged in a battle with Colorado and USC for the Pac-12 South title. Utah hosts Oregon before visiting Colorado in their regular-season finale. Once again, Kyle Whittingham is proving he’s one of the best coaches in the country.

12. Colorado (8-2) — The Buffs can’t revel in their 49-24 victory over Arizona last week very long. What awaits them is their toughest two-game stretch of the season: home matchups against Washington State and Utah. If they win the Pac-12 South, they will have definitely earned it.

13. Oklahoma State (8-2) — The Cowboys were lucky to beat Texas Tech, 45-44, on a missed extra point last week. But they probably feel they deserved a win such as that after their fiasco against Central Michigan earlier this season. Who knows how high they’d be ranked as a one-loss team. Oklahoma State visits TCU on Saturday.

14. Western Michigan (10-0) — The Broncos, the Group of 5’s only remaining unbeaten team, stayed perfect with last week’s 37-21 win over Kent State. With home games left against Buffalo and Toledo, Western Michigan will more than likely finish 12-0 before playing for the MAC championship.

15. USC (7-3) — The Trojans, who have won six straight, wrap up their Pac-12 slate by visiting UCLA on Saturday. USC has come a long way since being humiliated by Alabama in its season opener.

16. LSU (6-3) — The Tigers bounced back nicely from their loss to Alabama by routing Arkansas 38-10. LSU closes its regular season with a tough, two-game gauntlet – at home against Florida and at Texas A&M. Maybe the Bayou Bengals can ruin the Gators’ SEC East title hopes.

17. Florida State (7-3) — The Seminoles rolled at Boston College, 45-7, last week. They visit Syracuse before hosting Florida State in their regular-season finale. Their offense could be the difference in that matchup.

18. Auburn (7-3) — The Tigers’ SEC Championship and national title hopes vanished with last week’s 13-7 loss at Georgia. Saturday’s home game against Alabama A&M comes at a perfect time for Auburn, which can hold out Sean White and Kamryn Pettway so that they can recover from their respective injuries before the Iron Bowl.

19. Nebraska (8-2) — Tommy Armstrong Jr. and the Cornhuskers gutted out a 24-17 home win over Minnesota last week. With an outside shot to win the Big Ten West, Nebraska wraps up its regular season with Maryland at home and Iowa on the road.

20. Washington State (8-2) — The Cougars, who crushed Cal 56-21 last week, are 7-0 in conference play for the first time in school history. The Cougars will be hard-pressed to extend that perfect slate over the next two weeks with a road game at Colorado followed by a home game against Washington.

21. Florida (7-2) — The Gators, who beat South Carolina 20-7 last week, can clinch the SEC East by beating LSU on Saturday. If they lose to the Tigers, they still could win the title if Tennessee loses to either Missouri or Vanderbilt.

22. Boise State (8-1)

23. Texas A&M (7-3) — Another season that started with a lot of promise has slipped away following two straight defeats, including last Saturday’s 29-28 home loss to Ole Miss. The Aggies’ schedule ends with home games against Texas-San Antonio and LSU. A third straight 8-5 season is entirely possible.

24. San Diego State (9-1)

25. Troy (8-1)
