It’s never too early to be talking about the Heisman Trophy, right?

We’re now two weeks into the college football season, and already some of the SEC’s Heisman Trophy candidates are starting to separate themselves.

Each week, we’re going to assess their performance and re-calibrate this list to better reflect the chances of a SEC player bringing home the hardware for the first time since former Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel did so in 2012.

Let’s see how they fared in Week 2:

SEC HEISMAN HOPEFUL RANKINGS

1. RB Derrick Henry, Alabama

2015 stats: 31 carries, 243 rushing yards, six rushing touchdowns; two receptions, 12 receiving yards.

Week 1 performance: Henry followed a near-perfect performance to kick off a 2015 Heisman campaign with another touchdown-heavy performance against Middle Tennessee. While he failed to break the century mark rushing the football (18 carries for 96 yards), he again showed a nose for the end zone, collecting his second three-touchdown performance in as many weeks. Those six touchdowns are enough to give him a slight edge in the rankings ahead of Georgia RB Nick Chubb through two weeks. If he is able to muster a big performance against Ole Miss on Saturday, he is likely to become a national favorite for the award.

Status: Still trending upward.

2. RB Nick Chubb, Georgia

2015 stats: 35 carries, 309 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns; two receptions for 13 yards.

Week 2 performance: Chubb followed up a quality start to the season against UL-Monroe with another fantastic performance on the road against Vanderbilt in Georgia’s SEC opener. He carried the ball 19 times for 189 yards in the 31-14 Bulldogs win. If you wanted to nitpick, you could point to his lack of a touchdown as a negative from this game. While it won’t hurt his candidacy in the short term, a few more games without a touchdown may eliminate him because of voters’ tendency to fall in love with touchdowns as a statistic.

Status: Holding steady as a top tier candidate.

3. RB Leonard Fournette, LSU

2015 stats: 28 carries, 159 rushing yards, three rushing touchdowns.

Week 2 performance: Fournette was dealt a bad hand in the Heisman race when he did not get to pad his stats in a Week 1 match-up with McNeese State thanks to Mother Nature. But the sophomore running back did his best to make up for lost time by toting the rock 28 times in a win against Mississippi State in Starkville. Accounting for all three LSU touchdowns, Fournette again showed why he is considered one of the nation’s elite.

Status: Campaign rejuvenated after Week 1 cancellation.

4. QB Dak Prescott, Mississippi State

2015 stats: 56-of-90 passing for 572 yards and three touchdowns; 18 carries for 53 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns.

Week 2 performance: Strictly from a numbers perspective, Prescott justified his Heisman candidacy against the LSU defense on Saturday. He threw for 335 yards, completed more than 65 percent of his passes and did not throw an interception. Unfortunately, Heisman voters judge a quarterback first and foremost by his ability to lead his team to victory. And while Prescott did a nice job of bringing the Bulldogs to the doorstep of a victory, they are still 0-1 in conference play after a 21-19 loss to LSU.

Status: Reeling after loss to LSU in conference opener.

5. QB Chad Kelly, Ole Miss

2015 stats: 29 of 40 passing for 557 passing yards, six passing touchdowns and one interception; six carries for 46 yards and two rushing touchdowns.

Week 2 performance: I’ll go ahead and save you the time by saying, “He hasn’t played anyone yet!” That’s somewhat true. The Rebels games against UT-Martin and Fresno State have been a breeze, but that’s at least in part because of Kelly’s performance. And as Jacksonville State and Toledo proved last week, there is no such thing as an “easy win.” So give credit where it is due. Through two weeks, Kelly has stats that say he belongs in the discussion for the purposes of this article. With a trip to Tuscaloosa to take on No. 2 Alabama looming this weekend, we’ll find out for sure if he’ll stick on this list.

Status: Trending upward, quickly. Meeting with Alabama looms large.

Falling off the leaderboard this week: Tennessee QB Joshua Dobbs; Auburn QB Jeremy Johnson.

On the watchlist: Arkansas QB Brandon Allen; Arkansas RB Alex Collins; Kentucky RB Boom Williams; South Carolina WR Pharoh Cooper; Tennessee RB Jalen Hurd; Texas A&M WR Christian Kirk.
