In Week 4, 10 SEC teams went head-to-head and four other teams scheduled non-conference foes.

There weren’t any shocking results in the SEC West, but in the SEC East the defending champion lost and a preseason favorite is near the bottom of the standings.

Uncle Mo watched the games, checked out the polls before and after and read all the beat writer breakdowns to figure out which SEC teams have the most momentum going for them right now.

Let’s see where everyone stands:

  1. Ole Miss: In between trips to Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Gainesville, Fla., the Rebels didn’t look 100 percent focused on this week’s game in Oxford, Miss., with the Vanderbilt Commodores. UM did just enough to come away with a 27-16 win and remain a top 5 team in both polls to maintain the most momentum.
  2. Georgia: The 48-6 win over Southern itself hardly influences momentum, but the Bulldogs are the second-highest ranked SEC team (No. 6/8) and in the second-best position to make the playoff. The Bulldogs’ No. 2 spot in the momentum poll could be in jeopardy with Alabama coming to Athens, Ga., this Saturday.
  3. LSU: Syracuse gave the Tigers a closer game (34-24) than most people expected, but LSU is still tied for first in the SEC West and is the third-highest ranked team in the conference. The Tigers will get a crack at the top spot in November when they play four division opponents if the top two don’t stumble before then.
  4. Florida: Even if QB Will Grier plays for four years at UF, it’s going to be hard for him to ever top Saturday’s fourth-quarter comeback against Tennessee. Trailing 27-14, Grier led a pair of scoring drives with the winning touchdown pass, a 63-yard play, coming on fourth-and-14 with 1:26 remaining in the game. The Gators were picked to finish fifth in the SEC East, and are currently tied with Georgia for first. Florida will either jump to the top spot or fall to Earth after playing Ole Miss on Saturday.
  5. Texas A&M: The Aggies needed overtime to stay undefeated with a 28-21 win over the Razorbacks in Dallas. Arkansas is hardly a win to brag about right now, but considering the circumstances (neutral field, fourth-quarter comeback) TAMU gains some momentum. Texas A&M will need a win over Mississippi State to stay tied with Ole Miss and LSU for first in the SEC West standings.
  6. Mississippi State: The Bulldogs are back in the polls (No. 21/22) and back in the SEC West race with a 17-9 win at Auburn. A lot of momentum is on the line for MSU against the Aggies this week – it can either solidify contender status or fall back toward bottom of the division standings with a second conference loss.
  7. Kentucky: Beating Missouri, 21-13, gives the Wildcats the second-best conference record (2-1) in the SEC East heading into October. Not bad for a team picked to finish sixth in the division. UK won’t gain any conference momentum this week playing Eastern Kentucky without some help from Ole Miss or Alabama.
  8. Alabama: Even with a lackluster first half, Bama cruised to a 34-0 victory over Louisiana-Monroe. The scheduling should have helped Alabama get the Ole Miss hangover out of its system before a showdown against Georgia this Saturday. The Crimson Tide are in the middle of the momentum poll right now, but a major shift is on the way next week.
  9. South Carolina: The Steve Spurrier era in South Carolina looked to be on life support with UCF up 14-8 at the half. The Gamecocks must have received quite the halftime speech, as they exploded for 20 points in the third quarter on the way to a 31-14 victory. USC has the chance to gain some momentum in the division standings this Saturday against Missouri.
  10. Auburn: The good news for the Tigers: the defense held MSU to 17 points. The bad news: the offense didn’t score a touchdown. Auburn has a chance to work on its run defense and passing offense in (what should be) a tune-up game against San Jose State.
  11. Missouri: For the third week in a row, the Tigers have not looked like the back-to-back SEC East division winners. The 21-13 loss at Kentucky lets all SEC foes know that this Mizzou team is beatable. We’ll find out a lot about this UM team this Saturday when it hosts South Carolina.
  12. Vanderbilt: The Commodores lost to Ole Miss 27-16, but the game served as validation that Coach Derek Mason’s defense is the real deal. If Vanderbilt can get the offense going, it might able to pull off an upset or two this season and build some momentum for the future. VU doesn’t stand to gain much momentum playing Middle Tennessee State next week.
  13. Tennessee: UT is in danger of having its season fall apart if it can’t get past a heartbreaking 28-27 loss to Florida. Coach Butch Jones is being criticized by fans and commentators for conservative play calling and game management, and his players can’t believe they let another fourth-quarter lead slip away. But the upcoming three-game stretch of Arkansas, Georgia and Alabama will likely determine how the Volunteers’ season is judged.
  14. Arkansas: Nothing has gone right for the Razorbacks since a 48-13 win over UTEP in Week 1. On Saturday, Arkansas was on the verge of declaring itself a contender in the SEC West, but its 21-13 lead against Texas A&M with 4:19 left to play disappeared en route to a 28-21 overtime loss. The upcoming UA-UT game in Knoxville, Tenn., features arguably the two SEC teams most in need of a win.
