After a season of turmoil ended with a 3-9 record, South Carolina fans have reason to be a little concerned about the direction of the program.

Here are the five key questions facing the Gamecocks this off-season:

5. WHO’S THE QB?

Three different players, Connor Mitch, Lorenzo Nunez and Perry Orth, all took significant snaps at quarterback last season and, as of right now, all of them will be returning in 2016. Four-star recruit Brandon McIlwain is enrolling next month, and could mount a serious challenge for the job as well.

New coordinator Kurt Roper will want to sort through the candidates, reach a decision as soon as he can and try to get one of them ready to play in his offense.

The smart money is on at least one of the returning players not being in a South Carolina jersey when September rolls around. There is only one football, after all.

4. GRAY SKAI LOOMING?

Ever since Skai Moore’s barber (I can’t believe I just typed that) declared the junior linebacker’s plans on his Instagram account, his future with the program has been uncertain:

If he leaves early for the draft, it’s likely that a newcomer will find his way into the starting lineup. But with the lack of an official announcement from Moore, one wonders how hard Will Muschamp and new defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson are working behind the scenes to convince the All-SEC linebacker to stick around for his senior season?

Will he stay or will he go? Stay tuned…

3. RESTOCKING THE SHELVES

One of the biggest issues in Steve Spurrier’s last few seasons in Columbia was the dip in recruiting. Even in the midst of three-straight 11-win seasons, the Gamecocks weren’t able to parlay that on-field success into highly rated recruiting classes.

Robinson is the man to watch in terms of correcting this issue. A highly respected recruiter, Robinson has already played a key role in holding onto McIlwain’s commitment, and will be counted on to help South Carolina push into the top half of the league in the recruiting wars in the years to come.

2. REPLACING PHAROH

If a big play happened for the Gamecocks on offense in 2015, Pharoh Cooper was probably in the middle of it. In addition to leading the team in catches, receiving yards and touchdowns, he also threw a TD pass and added another one on the ground.

His early entry into the NFL Draft leaves an all-SEC-sized hole in the offense for 2016, and finding one or two guys to help fill it is a key issue heading into next season. Several young receivers, including Deebo Samuel, Hayden Hurst and D.J. Neal, will get a look and a few newcomers will likely factor into the mix as well.

1. THE NEW LEADER

It’s the biggest question of all, but it won’t be answered for a few years yet.

Was hiring Muschamp the right move for South Carolina?

While Muschamp was not South Carolina athletic director Ray Tanner’s first choice, but he was his final one. Bringing him on has led to a new crop of questions as well.

Has Muschamp learned from his experience at Florida? Is Roper the right guy to lead the offense? Will Robinson’s inexperience as a defensive coordinator hinder the squad next season?

Muschamp’s hire has been roundly criticized in the media, but it’s impossible to know how his stay in Columbia will unfold. Perhaps he mellows a bit as a head coach, Roper recaptures his Duke/Ole Miss mojo and Robinson continues to shine in living rooms across the Southeast. Only time will tell.

One thing seems certain: Finding out the answers to all of these questions won’t be boring.
