A little more than a week ago, ESPN analyst Tom Luginbill said on the Rich Taylor Show that 4-star South Carolina signee Dakereon Joyner may have a bigger future not being a QB. Interestingly, he compared him to former Florida playmaker Percy Harvin, too.

Joyner was ranked as the No. 9 dual-threat QB in the class of 2018, and the early enrollee completed just 1-of-5 passes for 25 yards and rushed seven times for 17 yards during South Carolina’s spring game.

With Jake Bentley potentially returning in 2019 and Will Muschamp already having named Mike Scarnecchia the backup QB in 2018, could Joyner actually switch to WR to make a quicker impact? Let’s not forget the fact that USC holds a commitment from talented signal caller Ryan Hilinski, too. It presents an interesting situation.

South Carolina OC Bryan McClendon disagreed with Luginbill’s take on his young QB, saying it’s still too early to make any kind of judgement.

“I think it’s way too early,” McClendon said prior to the Atlanta Gamecock Club meeting, via 247Sports. “I think he has a bright future and a lot left to learn to play quarterback. To even say someone can go and do anything else when you see their first spring practice when they should be in high school, I think it’s too early to say anything one way or another. I still think the kid has a bright future playing quarterback and he’ll keep progressing to see how things go from there.”

Joyner had a stellar high school career, passing for nearly 10,000 career yards. He scored 52 TDs as a senior in 2017, and he’s dynamic with the football.

McClendon sounds like he’ll give Joyner every opportunity to play QB, but if he’s buried on the depth chart, he could ultimately decide to switch positions and have a bigger impact. Time will only tell.
