South Carolina’s new up-tempo offense generated plenty of buzz throughout the spring.

ESPN’s Tom Luginbill said after seeing it in practice, he felt like he was watching “old-school Oregon.” Whether or not it produces like old-school Oregon in 2018 is a different story.

Ahead of the debut of South Carolina’s offense on Saturday in the spring game, Will Muschamp talked about his team’s new identity on that side of the ball.

“Playing fast was one of the things I felt like we really needed to do,” Muschamp said on ‘The Paul Finebaum Show.‘ “I felt like Jake (Bentley) plays much better when we play fast. I feel like it certainly could be advantageous for us, especially against some of the fronts that we’ve gotta block. We’ve got to get these guys more fatigued and make them play more snaps. In order to do that, you’ve gotta get first downs.

“But to be able to dictate the tempo of the game, whether you’re playing fast and you’re on the ball with normal tempo, or you’re in a situation where you’re looking back. I just want to be able to dictate the tempo of the game more.”

Muschamp added that Bentley has been progressing well in the offense and that the coaching staff gave the third-year starter more flexibility to make adjustments at the line of scrimmage.

“He’s at that time now where he needs to be in those situations,” Muschamp said of Bentley.

So does that mean we’ll see Bentley and the Gamecocks running the new offense and lighting up the scoreboard on Saturday? It doesn’t sound like it.

Muschamp didn’t sound like the Gamecocks were going to run a whole lot of new up-tempo looks during the scrimmage.

“I don’t know schematically that you’ll see a lot of difference tomorrow,” Muschamp said. “We’re not going to put anything new on tape that hasn’t already been put on tape before on either side of the ball.”

And just in case there was any doubt, Muschamp said that Deebo Samuel will not be playing in the spring game.

The Gamecocks will host their spring game on Saturday at noon ET on SEC Network.
