For the second-straight season, South Carolina’s quarterback position has been a virtual game of musical chairs.

Perry Orth started the 2016 season. True freshman Brandon McIlwain was then inserted to add some athleticism and dynamism. Orth was then put back in charge of the offense for the last two games.

The result? South Carolina is currently sitting at 2-4 — in danger of yet again missing out on a bowl appearance. Looking to galvanize the team, head coach Will Muschamp may turn to true freshman Jake Bentley this weekend against Massachusetts:

With Orth graduating after this season, it will be fascinating to see what direction the USC QB position ultimately goes. Lorenzo Nunez was already moved to wide receiver. Bentley is more of a traditional pocket passer — whilst McIlwain is a mobile athlete with a big arm.

The rest of this season may be used to build for the future. This would in theory signal plenty of playing time going forward this year for both McIlwain and Bentley.
