Kickoffs are going to be a little different in college football this season.

As announced earlier this week at SEC Media Days by Steve Shaw, if a fair catch is called on a kickoff or free kick, the ball will be automatically placed at the 25-yard line.

However, don’t expect to see that rule implemented when South Carolina is returning kicks. Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp has confirmed that Deebo Samuel will be his team’s kick returner this season, and he wants to see Samuel make big plays.

“We don’t plan on fair catching any,” Muschamp said at SEC Media Days in Atlanta on Thursday.

Samuel reiterated South Carolina’s kickoff strategy later in the day.

“We didn’t really pay that much attention,” Samuel said of the new rule. “I don’t think we’re going to be fair catching any kick returns.”

Samuel had 250 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns last season, but he only played three games before missing the rest of the season with a broken leg.

Samuel had only two kick returns last season, both of which were touchdowns. He has three career kickoff return touchdowns.
