The Zeb Noland story now has another chapter.

South Carolina made 4 turnovers, and Vanderbilt took advantage of half of them as the Commodores snapped a pair of historic streaks on Saturday at Williams-Brice Stadium. But the South Carolina backup quarterback was ready to save them, and did, 21-20 at Williams-Brice Stadium.

Before Vanderbilt’s fourth turnover of the game, the Commodores’ offense had 3 drives in the same quarter for that went for 9 plays for negative 3 yards, and 3 punts.

Yet behind Rocko Griffin, Vanderbilt drained the clock as South Carolina burned timeouts down the stretch. Griffin had 57 yards rushing by the time the Commodores kicked a field goal, and then gave South Carolina the ball back with 1:36 remaining. Coach Shane Beamer turned to Noland after a slew of turnovers by starter Luke Doty, and no timeouts remaining. Noland completed his first 2 passes, including a 31-yard pass to TE Nick Muse. Then he led the Gamecocks to the 9-yard line where he ultimately found Xavier Legette in the back of the end zone for tying score that setup the go-ahead extra point.

Vanderbilt then fumbled on the ensuing drive to end the game.

Vanderbilt had not beaten South Carolina since 2008, and now it’s one more season.

Vanderbilt took the lead on a 52-yard pass play from Mike Wright to Will Sheppard with just over 5 minutes left in the third quarter. By that point in the game, Wright had an efficient outing, going 9-for-17 passing for 207 yards with a TD and an interception with 51 yards rushing.

That touchdown came after Jaheim Bell fumbled on the cusp of a would-be touchdown.

The first half was mostly even as each team tried to snap long SEC losing streaks. Coming into Saturday, South Carolina had lost 9 straight SEC games, while Vanderbilt had lost 15 straight league games. By halftime, the Gamecocks led in yards 203-193, but Vanderbilt led in yards per play, 6.6 to 6.2

Vanderbilt started sophomore Wright in place of Ken Seals after Seals reportedly injured a finger on his throwing hand last week against Florida, per Vandy247.

Vanderbilt pulled within a touchdown late in the first half after a MarShawn Lloyd fumble gave the Commodores the ball at the South Carolina 23-yard line. Vanderbilt scored 3 plays later on a run by Rocko Griffin from 1 yard out. That was aided by a J.J. Enagbare flag for a face mask.

Boos rained from Williams-Brice Stadium faithful at the end of the half after South Carolina went for it on fourth down with about 6 minutes remaining from the Vanderbilt 13, as a pass to Xavier Legette gained just 1 yard. But then the crowd was upset after Doty appeared to avoid a sack, but nearly fumbled on a play that was reviewed at the end of the first half, and ultimately ruled a penalty for intentional grounding. That was a summary of the first half, when outside of a huge play early on, an intentional grounding call was ultimately a positive.

That spoiled, a bit, a strong start for the Gamecocks, as they went 12 plays and 75 yards and scored on the opening drive. Then they hit a huge play to Jaheim Bell, who scampered down the middle of the field for an 82-yard score.

The Gamecocks also avoided 2 targeting calls in the first half on plays that were overturned.
