South Carolina’s offense has experienced another serious injury.

One-time third-string quarterback Dakereon Joyner, who assumed the backup role after the injury to Jake Bentley, will miss Saturday’s game against Kentucky because of a hamstring injury, according to his high school coach, Steve LaPrad.

“They did an MRI, and it’s just a strain,” LaPrad said, as reported by Josh Kendall of The Athletic. “They don’t want it to tear. He hates it. Obviously, he wants to be playing, but they felt it’s better that he not.”

Joyner has been a versatile weapon for the Gamecocks. He is 7-of-12 passing for 89 yards, has rushed 10 times for 49 yards and has caught four passes for 29 yards this season. Jay Urich, another versatile player, is now the backup QB. Urich shined in the spring game, but has not recorded a catch or a run this season.

Coach Will Muschamp has often praised Joyner’s character with how he handled losing the backup QB competition in preseason camp, and he said he’s a great teammate.

He is a “Mr. Football” winner from South Carolina as he grew up in the Charleston area. Joyner was ranked as the No. 9 dual-threat quarterback in the country in his recruiting class, according to 247Sports.
