Shane Beamer describes crush of texts, what his dad said after first win as head coach
Shane Beamer is still enjoying the win over Eastern Illinois, and he recapped the special plays during a segment on the SEC Network Monday morning on “SEC This Morning.”
Beamer recalled the 11 players out of the 2 deep depth chart who had never been in a South Carolina uniform, and how the Gamecocks excelled in every phase. From scoring on defense, to blocking punts, and running a largely efficient offense, there was a lot to like fo the Williams-Brice Stadium faithful.
“Some of those guys I was worried about, but I didn’t think twice about it with Zeb (Noland) just because of his experience and his maturity,” Beamer said. “He was very cool, collected … Zeb didn’t panic, just kind of made it right. Played with great confidence and did a nice job.”
Noland was 13-for-22 passing for 121 yards and 4 touchdowns.
Beamer also said he did enough to stop and enjoy the moment on Saturday while focusing on the task at hand.
Beamer said he received at least 175-200 text messages on Sunday after the win, but joked, “hopefully I hear from the same people if we ever lose a game, that they’re as supportive after a win.”
Beamer said it was former players from South Carolina and Oklahoma, and high school coaches around the Palmetto State, as well as family and friends.
Frank Beamer, his dad, had a simple response: “Good opening win.”
