Josh Belk is big and strong. He’s listed at 6-foot-3, 359 pounds on South Carolina’s roster, and Gamecocks defensive line coach Lance Thompson said Belk has done more than 30 consecutive reps of 225 pounds on the bench press.

And that’s why Thompson said at fall camp on Tuesday that he’s excited to have Belk, who transferred from Clemson earlier this summer, on the team.

“I think he can be a good one, I really do,” Thompson said. “He’s got size. He’s got quickness. I think he’s got a little nasty about him, and he’s coachable.”

Belk is entering his freshman season after playing at Lewisville High School in Richburg, S.C. He went through spring drills with Clemson, before deciding to transfer South Carolina. He hasn’t yet suited up during practice for the Gamecocks, but Thompson said coach Will Muschamp will address the reason for that later this week.

Coming out of high school, Belk was a 4-star recruit and the No. 7 defensive tackle in the Class of 2018, per the 247sports composite rankings. He was also the No. 2 recruit from South Carolina.
