South Carolina freshman LB Ernest Jones will play in Belk Bowl, burning his redshirt
To redshirt or not to redshirt? That is the question for Ernest Jones.
After some consideration, the freshman linebacker has decided to suit up for the team’s upcoming Belk Bowl appearance against Virginia. If you were unfamiliar with the new NCAA redshirt rule, players are allowed to compete in up to four games and still maintain their redshirt status.
Jones had already appeared in four games this season, meaning playing in a fifth would cost him his redshirt status. Instead of returning in 2019 as a redshirt freshman and sitting out the Belk Bowl, Jones will play and be classified as a sophomore next season, Will Muschamp announced on Tuesday upon his arrival to the team’s hotel in Charlotte.
“Ernest is going to play,” Muschamp revealed. “I talked to his mom and feel good about that… Those guys want to play, it’s a long career and obviously, if you get jammed up in a spot, in a situation where an injury occurs, you can always go back and look for a medical redshirt.”
After signing with the Gamecocks, Jones enrolled early in Columbia. He has registered a total of 14 tackles, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery this season for South Carolina.
