It’s a game that South Carolina fans would like to forget.

Last season when the Gamecocks faced Kentucky, the Wildcats overturned a 14-point, fourth-quarter deficit and came away with a 45-38 win.

It was just one in a series of such contests in 2014, but it still left a bitter taste.

Saturday night at Williams-Brice, South Carolina will look for a happier result.

“I’ve always believed last year’s game with whomever you played is history,” South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said. “Every game stands on its own merit. We got beat last year, we got beat several times last year in a similar way and we are trying to prevent it from happening this year.”

Kentucky opened the 2015 campaign with a 40-33 win over Louisiana-Lafayette last week.

“They beat Louisiana-Lafayette last week, scored a lot of points, 40-33; we have to be ready to play very well,” Spurrier said. “Hopefully we can make a lot of improvement. That is probably what we need to worry about. See if we can line up, get the ball snapped, eliminate some careless penalties — try to look like a pretty good team when we go out here on Saturday night.

“(We are) looking forward to a big home crowd, our first home game of the season. A lot of our players have never played here, so it will be a wonderful experience.”

Spurrier had high praise for the Wildcats in his press conference today.

“I think Mark Stoops has done an excellent job there,” he said. “They are very close to being a winning team and very easily could be this year.”

Gamecocks fans will be hoping that the Wildcats wait one more week to figure that out.

KENTUCKY WILDCATS CLOSER LOOK

Top offensive player: Stanley “Boom” Williams, Soph., RB — Bad pun alert, but Williams started the game with a boom, taking a hand-off for a 75-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage. He had 10 carries for 135 yards and that score against the Ragin’ Cajuns last week.

Top defensive player: Josh Forrest, Sr., LB — After leading the Wildcats in tackles in 2014, the Kentucky native picked up where he left off with six solo and 15 total tackles in last week’s victory.

Top special teams player: Austin MacGinnis, Soph., K — A first-team All-SEC selection last season, MacGinnis hit two of his three field goal attempts last week and also has a big leg on kickoffs, with four touchbacks in the season opener.
