South Carolina quarterback Jake Bentley has had his struggles this season, but it seems as though the Gamecocks’ offensive coordinator has figured out a solution to keep his quarterback composed.

“The first thing I would say is catch the football.”

Bryan McClendon was on South Carolina’s weekly call-in radio show “Carolina Calls” on Thursday, and emphasized that Bentley’s teammates making plays will take plenty of pressure off the young quarterback.

“Just to have the confidence to go out there and have guys go out there and make plays around him, I think that would help a lot” said McClendon, “(Bentley’s) just a naturally fiery guy. You have to do a good job and make sure he doesn’t work himself up into making decision that aren’t real rational, so for the most part, I think he’s done that.

“But the thing is, he’s one of those guys who wants people to feed off his energy, wants people to feed off his enthusiasm, at times. We’ve just got to help him with understanding – not just him, but anybody that way – you want to make sure you’re helping them use it at the right times, all the time.”

Bentley has thrown 7 interceptions in five games this season, but has not been helped by drops from his teammates.

“When we say go back to the basics, everybody do what you’re coached to do at that time, all the time, and we’ll be in good shape,” McClendon said.

South Carolina fans hope this will be Bentley’s best game of the season so far, as Bentley is 2-0 against the Vols. His head coach is undefeated against the Orange and White as well, Muschamp is a perfect 6-0 against Tennessee as a head coach.

The Vols and Gamecocks kick off in Columbia at 7:30pm ET on the SEC Network Saturday night.
