Not only is Jay Urich’s 2020 season over, but so is the South Carolina quarterback’s career.

On Tuesday, Gamecocks head coach Will Muschamp announced that Urich wouldn’t play this year due to a chronic shoulder injury that would require surgery. Later in the day, Urich issued a statement on Twitter, stating that he is “heartbroken that my football career is over.”

Urich wrote that he’ll be undergoing surgery Wednesday, and he also thanked South Carolina fans for their support throughout his career:

Although Urich was listed as a quarterback last season, he played both wide receiver and special teams while appearing in eight games for the Gamecocks. He had one 11-yard reception in 2019, while his lone pass attempt (a 9-yard completion) came during the 2018 campaign.

Muschamp also announced earlier in the day that Urich will be joining his South Carolina coaching staff, becoming a graduate assistant after he graduates from the school in December.

The Gamecocks are set to open the 2020 season on Saturday at home against No. 16 Tennessee at 7:30 p.m. ET on SEC Network.
