South Carolina and several other Power 5 schools reportedly have interest in Tom Herman. But Herman’s current school is doing all it can to keep him.

ESPN reported that Houston will offer Herman a new contract paying him $3 million a year annually. His current five-year contract pays him $1.35 million a year.

“The board is 100 percent committed to Coach Herman,” University of Houston board chair Tillman Fertitta said. “Our actions reflect our desire to retain him.”

Houston is 10-0 in Herman’s first year as head coach, and ranked 13th in the latest AP poll.

If Herman accepts the raise, it would more than double his salary. It would also make Herman the highest-paid head coach at a non-Power 5 school. Cincinnati coach Tommy Tuberville is currently the highest-paid coach at a Group of 5 school, making $2.2 million per year.

Herman is one of only five college football coaches to start his career 10-0. Yale’s Walter Camp (1888), Penn’s George Woodruff (1982), Miami’s Larry Coker (2001) and Boise State’s Chris Petersen (2006) are the others.

South Carolina has been searching for a new head coach since Steve Spurrier resigned on Oct. 12. The Gamecocks are 1-3 under interim head coach Shawn Elliott.
