Perhaps it’s just wishful thinking by South Carolina athletic director Ray Tanner.

But the Gamecocks remain in talks with former football coach Steve Spurrier about a potential ambassador role for the school’s sports.

Spurrier, who resigned from the football team mid-season, is the all-time wins leader at Florida and South Carolina. But he’s always maintained that his plan in retirement is to spend time in Crescent Beach, Fla.

If he wishes to work, he likely would have opportunities both as an offensive consultant, and perhaps more enticing to an SEC audience, as an analyst — perhaps for the conference’s TV network.

Still, Spurrier has yet to tell South Carolina no.

“We have talked about it and he said we’d talk about it another time,” Tanner told The State newspaper. “I’ve offered him an opportunity to have an office here in the Rice building should he want to do that. He’s taking some time now to decide what he wants to do.”
