The 2018 PGA Championship is the fourth major championship of the 2018 golf season. Similar to the other major events like the Ryder Cup, the four majors each year are golf’s mainstream, marquee events by which the world’s best golfers are measured.

The 2018 edition of the PGA Championship could be the last time the major is played in August of the golf season. Starting in 2019, the PGA has announced that the tournament will be moved to May (and similarly the Players Championship played at TPC Sawgrass will be moved to March).

So far in 2018, golf has had three different major champions. Patrick Reed won The Masters. Brooks Koepka won the U.S. Open. Francesco Molinari won The Open Championship (previously known as the British Open).

For mainstream fans, the PGA Championship might be the least interesting major of the season for a variety of reasons. The tournament comes later in the season, much later after the momentum of the big tournaments such as The Masters and The U.S. Open. Also, the tournament seems to have an identity problem. The Masters is The Masters. The U.S. Open is always incredibly hard on very unique American courses. And, The Open is just something different, played on old courses in a foreign land. The PGA Championship is just “the other major” for many mainstream golf fans.

All that goes out the window, however, if on Sunday you have a number of big names battling for the championship. If Spieth, Fowler, Thomas, and of course Tiger are all in the mix on Sunday, then the eyeballs will follow.

2018 PGA Championship Key Storylines

So, what are the key stories that the golf world is watching as the PGA Championship tees off? Let’s look at a few.

As usual, we begin with Tiger Woods. For a few minutes last month, Tiger was in sole possession of the lead at The Open Championship. It was brief, but Tiger still finished in a top ten at a major tournament. Tiger hasn’t played this tournament since 2015 (he missed the cut). Tiger’s coming into the tournament with not a great performance at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, so we might not expect much from Tiger this week.

Jordan Spieth is going for a career grand slam. He’s won the Masters, The U.S. Open and the Open Championship. He needs the PGA Championship. Only five golfers ever have done it. He can be the sixth. He’s going to need to get his putter going to make it happen.

Alabama graduate, Justin Thomas, is coming into the week with a nice victory at Bridgestone. Thomas, of course, also won this tournament last year, so he’s one to watch this week.

2018 PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

Can one of the big young guns get their first major? Rickie Fowler is always a crowd favorite and has been close a number of times. Tommy Fleetwood and his hair might be knocking on the door for their first major as well.

2018 PGA Championship Dates & TV

The 2018 PGA Championship tees off on August 9, 2018 through August 12, 2018.

TNT and CBS will be splitting the coverage of the PGA Championship. TNT will be televising the first two rounds. TNT and CBS will split the Saturday and Sunday broadcasts.

2018 PGA Championship Location

This year’s PGA Championship is being played at Bellerive Country Club in Town and Country, Missouri, which is a suburb of St. Louis.

The club has been open since 1897 and has hosted a number of marquee events including the PGA Championship back in 1992. Bellerive also hosted the U.S. Open in 1965.
