5-star QB becomes 3rd Oklahoma decommitment of day following Lincoln Riley departure
The hits keep coming for Oklahoma. As expected with a coaching change, the Sooners have lost some major commitments after Lincoln Riley’s exit to take the USC job.
Los Alamitos (California) quarterback Malachi Nelson is the latest recruit to back off his pledge to OU. Listed at 6-3, 180 pounds, Nelson is rated 5-stars, the No. 2 quarterback and No. 2 prospect overall nationally in the class of 2023 on the 247Sports Composite.

As a top QB prospect, Nelson’s offers include Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Tennessee and Texas A&M, per his recruiting profile. Right now, it looks like Nelson will stay close to home and play for Riley at USC.
It’s a long time, though, until 2023 recruits can sign. We’ll see how this recruitment shakes out.
Oklahoma has already lost these 2023 recruits following Lincoln Riley's departure:
