It’s unclear at this time if Bill Self will even survive to coach Kansas once the NCAA concludes its investigation into the Jayhawk basketball program but that hasn’t stopped the school from awarding the coach a lifetime contract.

As if that wasn’t strange enough, Kansas does not currently have a full-time athletic director to make this decision as the school recently parted ways with former AD Jeff Long following the sudden collapse of the brief Les Miles era in Lawrence.

The Kansas basketball program has been accused of multiple Level 1 violations (which are the most severe violations and come with the highest punishment), while Self has been accused of having a lack of institutional control and head coach responsibility by the NCAA.

According to records obtained by KCUR out of Kansas City, the school has paid millions in lawyer fees to defend Self against the NCAA.

Kansas Chancellor Doug Girod issued the following statement following the news of Self’s lifetime contract.

“For almost 20 years, Coach Self has embodied the spirit and tradition of the University of Kansas, leading our men’s basketball program to a national championship, 15 Big 12 titles and 17 NCAA Tournament appearances. We believe in Coach Self and we believe in the future of our program under his leadership, and we are thrilled that he will continue to be a Jayhawk for the rest of his coaching career.”

Kansas did not mention the ongoing investigation when announcing Self’s new contract but the school has listed NCAA/Big 12 rules violations as reasons to fire Self for cause without paying the coach any additional money outside of what he earned up to dismissal and any retention bonuses owed from the previous year.

Despite that clause in the contract, Kansas has also outlined that if Self is found guilty in regards to the current NCAA investigation, it will not punish the coach for his role in any violations.

Talk about talking out of both sides of your mouth.
