College GameDay paid their respects to the late Bobby Bowden on Saturday morning. The admiration was shared by Rece Davis, Kirk Herbstreit, Lee Corson and Desmond Howard.

Bowden passed away on Aug. 8. The 91-year-old is considered one of the best coaches in the history of college football.

Bowden coached at Samford and South Georgia State College as an assistant early in his career. He was also an assistant at West Virginia and Florida State before becoming head coaches at both schools. Professionally, Bowden is best known for turning Florida State into a national power thanks to an explosive offense and elite talent on defense. But that’s just part of his story.

Bowden wasn’t the type of coach that worked 18-hour days as has become customary in college football. Bowden’s family and faith were two important reasons to leave the office at a reasonable time. The devout Christian was well known for witnessing to some of the all-time greats in college football, including former coach Mark Richt.

ESPN also paid tribute to Bowden via a video feature narrated by Gene Wojciechowski. Bowden won two national championships, but as the video illustrates, he nearly won several more.

Florida State hasn’t been the same since Bowden retired following the 2009 season. The Seminoles replaced Bowden with Jimbo Fisher, who left for Texas A&M amidst reports that he wasn’t satisfied with the support he was receiving in Tallahassee. Fisher was replaced by Willie Taggart, who was fired and replaced by Mike Norvell last year.
