Colin Cowherd lives in Los Angeles and likes the USC Trojans. Well, he likes them when they aren’t a mess, anyway.

And right now, they’re a mess. The Trojans fired head coach Clay Helton on Monday, and Cowherd has a problem with the names that are in the mix to replace him.

During “The Herd with Colin Cowherd” on FS1 on Tuesday, Cowherd went on a rant against college football, saying USC should look to the NFL ranks for its next head coach. In the process, he calls out Matt Campbell, James Franklin, Lincoln Riley and others who are rumored to be in the mix for the USC job:

“College football is in a perpetual cycle of thinking small, looking down. I’m not into that. I read every single college football reporter yesterday and it was all the same names up for the USC job. Just a bunch of nice college guys. They coach in towns like Ames, Iowa, and rural Pennsylvania. … The last time this program mattered, they had an NFL coach, Pete Carroll. They didn’t matter before then until they had an NFL guy, John Robinson. When’s the last time UCLA mattered? Dick Vermeil was at their best. They’re winning again with Chip Kelly. NFL coaches. When’s the last time Miami mattered? Butch Davis. Stop bringing guys from Temple to your program.

“There’s 3 urban universities in America with powerful college football programs — Miami, USC and UCLA. If you look at the most successful guys that have cut through, it’s Butch Davis, Jimmy Johnson and Dennis Erickson — NFL guys. USC — John Robinson, Pete Carroll. And, by the way, (Steve Sarkisian), who has coached in the NFL and could coach again in the NFL at the coordinator level, he was successful before he had personal issues. … They get the big city. They’re not small-town guys. … College football has a Names, Images and Likenesses reality. It is an avalanche and it is going a million miles an hour downhill. And you listen to all these college coaches and they’re freaking out about NIL. … NFL guys coach millionaires. That’s the future of this sport.

“I would get on the phone to Doug Pederson, to Anthony Lynn to Matt Nagy. NFL coaches. … They’re not control freaks like all these college football coaches. … They’re all fine coaches. Lincoln Riley. Why would you leave Oklahoma for USC and their political nonsense? James Franklin. He’s a college coach. He wants control. He makes $8 million a year in rural Pennsylvania. What would you have to make in Los Angeles? $15 million? … This is not Ames, Iowa. This is not Knoxville. … If you’re looking for control, live in the sticks. That’s not what this city is about.”

Where will the Trojans turn for their next coach? That remains to be seen, but Cowherd wants them to set their sights on the NFL.
