UCF AD taking some heat after suggesting Knights athletics may require government aid
College programs all across the nation are dealing with slashed budgets thanks to the coronavirus pandemic and are attempting to work around the loss of revenue they depend on to keep going.
Unfortunately, that’s something too many Americans are dealing with at this time, which has resulted in many seeking help from the government.
That’s something UCF AD Mike White can apparently get on board with for his program, too.
During a recent interview with Matt Murschel of the Orlando Sentinel, White suggested UCF may need government aid to keep running the next year.
Orlando Sentinel: Do you know how much financial impact Monday’s NCAA’s decision will have?
Danny White: “It’s going to be somewhere in the $3-$500,000 range, it just depends on how many of them elect to do it. The way that they did it was smart because it’s a one-time expense. As we look into next year, I think there are going to be a lot of scenarios where there are one-time challenges. We’ve just got to find a way and hopefully, there’s ways with federal and state support, one-time relief to help us get through the next 12 months or so.”
Now doesn’t seem like the time for college sports programs to be asking for government assistance.
We aren’t the only one thinking that either, as the negative reactions have come pouring in following White’s recent comments.
Asking the Feds for help? No. No, no….no. No. NO. Please don’t ask the federal government to “bail out” college sports. Don’t do this. https://t.co/wLlOp77RC6

Is UCF's Danny White the first athletic director to float the idea of government, either federal or state, providing help to athletic departments?https://t.co/QDrjFTSa0k pic.twitter.com/ICgw85wKWr

If he's the first, he should be the last.
