Earlier this month, Florida State fired second-year head coach Willie Taggart after the Seminoles went 9-12 through 21 games under Jimbo Fisher’s successor.

Upon Taggart’s dismissal, “insiders” on message boards and social media began buzzing about Bob Stoops being the top candidate for the job, with local media echoing the behind-the-scenes chatter, though the FSU athletic department still hired a global executive search firm (suggesting a Bob Stoops hire was not as close to happening as the rumor mill indicated).

With the Seminoles Search now entering Week 2, interim coach Odell Haggins has had an opportunity to boost his resume. Haggins, a former All-American defensive lineman at Florida State, is in his second interim stint with the Seminoles, having also held the position for two games after Fisher’s departure for Texas A&M.

Haggins’ improved his head coaching record to 3-0 this past Saturday as FSU notched a 38-31 win on the road at Boston College in Week 11. Some Noles players are now publicly campaigning via social media for Haggins to be named the full-time head coach.

With LSU’s success this season, some athletic directors, such as FSU’s David Coburn, might be wondering if the next Ed Orgeron is already working for them, but Haggins lack of head coaching experience (outside the interim stints) figures to make him a longshot candidate to replace Taggart, though it has the potential to be a feel-good hire for the Florida State faithful. After a brief NFL playing career, Haggins returned to FSU in 1994 to join Bobby Bowden’s staff as a tight ends and offensive line coach. He moved over to coaching defensive line in 1996 and has held that position since.
