Sitting at 6-5 headed into Saturday’s season finale against the Duke Blue Devils, the Miami Hurricanes have already clinched a bowl berth in Manny Diaz’s first year at the helm.

The seventh consecutive trip to a bowl game for the program, this season has not been devoid of low points, however. Miami lost at home to the 3-8 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, 28-21, on October 14 and, most recently, dropped a road game to ex-Hurricanes coach Butch Davis and the Florida International Panthers, 30-23, on November 23.

Despite the often bumpy ride, it appears Diaz will return in 2020 regardless of how the season’s last two games play out.

A Miami native, the 45-year-old Diaz began his career in coaching at his alma mater, Florida State, as a graduate assistant in 1998.

Working his way up to his first defensive coordinator job with the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders in 2005, he got his start in the SEC as Dan Mullen’s coordinator and linebackers coach at Mississippi State in 2010.

Serving in the same role under Mark Richt with the Hurricanes from 2016-18, Diaz originally agreed to become the next head coach of the Temple Owls in December 2018.

After Richt’s abrupt resignation just weeks later, he reversed course and returned to Coral Gables, signing a five-year deal beginning at $3.1M annually, per the Miami Herald.

Looking to reach the seven-win mark for the fifth straight year, Miami’s Saturday showdown with Duke from Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham will kick at 3:30PM ET on ESPN2.
