UAB is moving on from Legion Field.

You know a stadium is iconic when it has more than one nickname.

That’s the case with Legion Field as some refer to the stadium as “Old Gray Lady” while others call it the “Football Capital of the South.”

Whatever name you prefer to call it, UAB has suited up for the last time at Legion Field as the team wrapped up spring practice over the weekend by holding its annual spring game in the venue.

Moving forward, UAB will play in downtown Birmingham’s Protective Stadium.

“Today was all about getting reps for a lot of guys and we accomplished that,” head coach Bill Clark said following UAB’s spring game. “We limited the offense and I thought our defense showed what they are capable of. As I was in the locker room today, I was thinking of all the great memories I have had here. The high school games, the great locker room celebrations, the Children’s Harbor games. Legion Field has given us some great memories.”

Of course, Legion Field was the site of many epic Iron Bowls over the years as Alabama and Auburn used to meet in Birmingham. Since 1998, the series has been a home-and-home event held in Tuscaloosa and Auburn.
